Almost Famous: Slow Reverse

Almost Famous: Slow Reverse

December 10th, 2009

Slow Reverse is an up-and-coming electronic-pop trio made up of U-Krist Sirichana (Uze), Srivara Arayawongkul (Oil) and Kasawan Kungvalpivat (Pang). They recently released a self-titled debut album, which fuses whispery vocals with dreamy, synthesized melody, under their record label Colorcode and their debut track “Moving” is already flying high in indie radio charts.

BK: Why Slow Reverse?
Uze:
Before we were Lovely Loose Cat, but we felt the name was just too cute. It didn’t feel right. It took us a long while to come up with Slow Reverse. I think it best represents the overall tone and feel of our music.

BK: How did you get together?
Uze:
The original line-up was me, Oil and another female singer Chompoo. We all studied at the Faculty of Architecture, Chulalongkorn University. Then Chompoo left to study abroad, so we got Pang to join us instead.

BK: We heard you spent almost four years completing this album?
Oil:
Yes. We are all busy with our day jobs, so we only had time to get together on weekends to work on the album. If there’s a gig coming up, then we have to try to meet for rehearsals after work.

BK: How would you describe your music?
Uze:
Easy-listening, dreamy electronic pop. We listen to quite eclectic music. For this album, we draw inspirations from bands in Japan, Germany and Iceland. But basically, we like bands with beautiful melodies, so you can see that influence in our album. Slow Reverse focuses more on melody than lyrics. Melody is the attraction. We want it to be a concept album, in which each song weaves together seamlessly.

BK: Tell us more about your record label.
Uze:
We didn’t think an existing label would be interested in signing us, so we decided to start Colorcode using our personal funds. Now we’ve already signed three other bands. You should hear their albums next year.

BK: What are your criteria in signing a band?
Uze:
Most of the bands we’ve talked to are in our circle of friends. We aim to produce quality music as an alternative to the mainstream sound. So we look for something special and unique. Like, one of the bands we signed, they make fresh electronic music—just melodies, no lyrics.

BK: Your CD packaging is impressive. Did you design it yourself?
Uze:
No, it’s by our friend Mac. He was a graphic designer at Smallroom and also an artist himself [Yuri’s Nominee]. Since he did such an elaborate job, we have to sell it at B290, which is quite expensive. But the feedback has been great. It’s sold out at DJ Siam. Nattika Srimaneerat and Pimmanee Sukbanjong
