Q & A : Jui Juis

Q & A : Jui Juis

June 23rd, 2009

Better known as Jui Juis (www.myspace.com/juijuis), Korat native Suttipong Sutinrum’s oddball songs and surprising live shows are now getting him a following in Bangkok. His third EP, It’s Never Too Late to Learn, has already yielded the chart-climbing single “Lesson 1.”

BK: Why Jui Juis?
Jui Juis:
Jui is my nickname. I’ve released two EPs independently, which I did all by myself from designing the packaging to composing the songs and playing the instruments. So it’s actually many Juis working together to make music.

BK: Why did an art graduate like you become a musician?
JJ:
You know what, my childhood dream was, in fact, to have a photocopier. When I was a kid, I loved reading comics. I always went to a photocopy house next door to have them copy my favorite pages so I could stick them on my walls. Being a musician was pretty unintentional. I just started playing in my friend’s pub in Chian Mai for fun, and one thing led to another.

BK: Can you tell us more about your new EP?
JJ:
It’s called It’s Never Too Late to Learn. It’s my motto. I learn new things every day as a musician and as an artist. I can’t really describe the style of my music, but I’d say it’s a collage. It’s everything, from beatbox to weird guitar effects and random Japanese words, combined together to make one whole album.

BK: And what about your many funny voices?
JJ:
I am a solo artist. Sometimes I get bored so I have to find a way to entertain both myself and the audiences by tweaking and playing with my voice to create different characters in my songs.

BK: Has anyone ever accused you of being crazy?
JJ:
Me? Crazy? If I am crazy, then I am not alone. There are many people out there who like my music and are crazy enough to come see me. I want to make music that is fun and easily accessible so everyone can have fun shouting along with me. My style is kinda raw and unpredictable. I shout when I feel like shouting. It’s my way to unleash anger and stress. It’s better than to end up with a headache.

BK: What would you say to people who  don’t know Jui Juis?
JJ:
Don’t believe the hype or the word-of-mouth. Don’t expect me to be wild, funny, crazy or whatever you might have heard. Give my music a try first and then judge whether you like it or not.
