Q&A: Nawapol Thamrongrattanarit

October 10th, 2008

Up-and-coming short filmmaker, Nawapol Thamrongrattanarit is one of the founders of Third Class Citizen (www.thirdclasscitizen.exteen.com), a group of indie filmmakers who host free screenings of “third-class cinema,” including everything from luuk thung music videos to artsy shorts.

Third Class Citizen is…: Hoping to create a small community for film lovers and indie filmmakers.

Never leave home without: Money

Favorite film: Roy Anderson’s Songs From the Second Floor, Tsai Ming-liang’s Goodbye, Dragon Inn.

When I need to be inspired: Read books and get out of Bangkok.

Reading: Mini Flyer Theater Collection. It’s a collection of Japanese-versions of film posters.

Favorite Bangkok sound: The aerobic songs played in the evening.

Most annoying thing I have to encounter everyday: My own indecisiveness and anxiety.

Most inspirational person: Right now? I’ve got to go with Leena Jang and Thoranee [Bangkok governor candidates].

Most embarrassing film in my DVD collection: Everything I bought but never watched.

If Bangkok were a film, it would be: Surreal.

My advice for aspiring short filmmakers: It’s your money. Shoot it as you like it.

I’m currently working on: My first feature film called A Paralyzed Circus.

What’s next?: My second pocket book on a trip to Hong Kong.

Would like to be remembered as: Nawapol Thamrongrattanarit.

At 7pm on Oct 17, catch Nawapol and his fellow Third Class Citizens at Bioscope Theater (410/118 Ratchadaphisek Soi 22, near MRT Ratchadaphisek Exit 4) as they screen Put the Gun Down, a short film by Ubon Ratchathani police officer Weerasak Suyala.
