Secondhand Furniture Shops
Secondhand Furniture Shops
June 16th, 2009Dear Mr. KIA, After all this time living with my folks I finally get to move out of the family home and into my own pad. The problem is it’s unfurnished and I am on a tight budget. Do you happen to know any secondhand furniture shops so I can deck out my flat in a retro style? —Miss Crazy for Less
Dear CFL, Moving away from home is a big step. You know if you ever need any company then don’t forget to give me a call, once you’ve got the furniture though—I don’t sit on the floor. Also let’s not use the word secondhand to describe this stuff, I prefer to call it vintage, a little like me. To get your flat looking suitably fly, here are three shops:
Retails Too (289 Pridi Phanomyong Soi 42, Sukhumvit 71, 02-713-3354, www.scadbangkok.org/retails/retailstoo.htm. Open Tue-Sat 9am-5pm) lets you browse almost new furniture and do your bit for charity. They organize regular garage sales of secondhand items (call them for the venues) from furniture to clothes, with all money raised going to the SCAD foundation.
Hai Furniture (99/30 Moo 6, opposite of Thai Tanu bank, Bang Koon Tian Rd., 02-416-4448, www.haifurniture.com. Open Mon-Sat 8am-5.30pm) handily provides pictures of all available products on their website. Just log in and then call for a price on their range of used home and office furniture, antiques and decorative items.
Everyone knows Wat Suan Kaew (1 Moo 1, Bang Len, Bang Yai, Nontaburi, 02–595-1946/-7, Open Thu-Tue 8am-4pm) is where to head for cool used stuff. Pra Payom established the Wat Suan Kaew Foundation in an effort to reuse unwanted items. Donated by the former owners all the furniture on sale here has been fully renovated.
