Volunteer Teaching Programs

Dear Mr. KIA, As a third year student in the faculty of Education, I’ve had plenty of experience tutoring high school kids. I mean it’s great making money but I’d rather do something more worthwhile. I’ve heard a lot about volunteer teaching programs can you guide me in the right direction? —Miss Heart Searcher

Dear MHS, Respect is due. I mean I don’t take many things seriously but the education of tomorrow’s leaders means a lot. I want to be well looked after when I’m old and incapable. To help make sure the street kids know their A to Z, join one of these teacher volunteer programs:

Kru Bannok (053-737-412/3, 08-7183-3705, 08-6181-6195, www.bannok.com/volunteer) lets you feel the mountain breeze as you teach children between 4-15, and stay the night with local villagers around Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai. The trip normally lasts four days three nights (Thu-Sun) and costs B890 including meals but not transport.

Teacher4Sunday (08-1515-8564, www.volunteerspirit.org/project/920) runs classes every Sunday morning from 9am-noon for a group of 20-30 kindergarten to primary students. The main lessons will be Thai and Maths. Log on to the website for the map of where to meet.

More artistic? Go for the Sunday Art Teacher program (08-6540-3995, www.volunteerspirit.org/project/828), to help small groups of kids aged 8-13 expore their creativity through an art lesson. Every Sunday 10am-12:30pm at Narathiwas Soi 14 Rd., Sathorn.
