Woman and Weapon #2
Woman and Weapon #2
July 1st, 2009Known for the audacious way that he addresses controversial problems within Thailand’s contemporary society, Vasan Sitthiket’s new series of oil paintings look to rebel against a society plagued by capitalism. Here, he tells us about “Woman and Weapon #2.”

Medium:
Oil on canvas.
The story behind this piece:
I feel that we live in a society largely ruled by capitalism and I want people to fight back, to start a revolution. The weapon represents the fighting back and the desire to break free from any social constraints. I want to restore our right to be free and not fall victim to anyone or anything.
What inspires you?
We live in a society where women have become a sex object and a product of capitalism. I want the women to represent, not just themselves, but also men and gay people who are also stuck in this same vicious cycle.
What do you want to convey to the viewers?
The painting has many colors and layers—just like a poem. Each viewer will get a different kind of “conversation” out of this piece, depending on their background and life experiences.
