BANGKOK VENUE

Black Amber Barber Shop & Tattoo

An indie barbershop with an edgy gentleman’s club vibe.

Buzz: Run by the guy behind The Circus Bangkok absinthe bar, Chavin “Kwan” Nantaterm, Black Amber continues the independent barbershop trend in Bangkok, integrating the idea of a gentleman’s club into its setting.

Décor: Black Amber has taken over the first floor of an old four-story shophouse in a little alley between Thong Lor sois 5 and 7, opting for a look that’s very 1920s industrial. Bare cement walls are complemented by metal shelves and stairs, leather sofas, retro barber chairs and wood cut glass cabinets that display various pomades.

Services: The two head barbers, Worrapat “Tommy” Thirawatnanthakul and Pongpitaya “Nuii” Charoensap, offer cuts with shampoo at B700 (B300 for kids), while a hot towel shave will cost you B500. There’s great attention to detail, with each cut taking up to 45 minutes. Keeping to the gentleman’s club vibe, those getting a cut are also offered a complimentary single malt (payment by tip box, if you’re feeling generous) and you can also bring your own cigars and smoke inside. There are also big brand pomades available to purchase like JS Sloane, Trix O’ Treat and Murray’s. Coffee, tea and chocolate (B80 for hot/B100 for cold) are also available.
