BANGKOK BAR

Spec Bar

Another home-style bar in Ekkamai from the people behind Baan Puen.

The buzz: Owned by the same people behind Ekamai Mall's Baan Puen, this bar and restaurant has a similarly cozy vibe, rolling out delicious and decently priced Thai dishes, and a long list of cocktails and drinking promotions.

The decor: With its vintage cinema sign out front, this two-story building is certainly welcoming. The ground floor boasts a white feature wall adorned with neatly arranged photos with floor-to-ceiling windows looking out onto the street. The real action is upstairs, which hosts live music every evening with a focus on '90s retreads amid checkered floors, dangling greenery and sheets billowing from the ceiling. The prime balcony spots offer a nice breeze.

The drinks: Like at Baan Puen, Jameson features prominently. Signature cocktails (all B260, with buy-one-get-one-free before 9pm) are fruity and not particularly strong, like the Irish Peach (Jameson and peach juice), JamesJeed (Jameson and Midori liqueur) and Strawberry Blessing (umeshu and fresh strawberry served with cherries and a lollipop). Absolut vodka towers are B999, recommended for 4 or more people. If beer is more your thing, Chang jugs are B285 (buy-two-get-one-free all night).

The food: Straight-up Thai drinking food. Served in adorable pin-to (lunchboxes), appetizers come in at around B140, like the best-selling deep-fried chicken knuckles. Other picks include the chicken wings in spicy black soup (B195) and larb omelet (B145). Already well-priced, you can get 30-percent off all dishes before 9pm.

The crowd: Young professionals unwinding with a meal and a few drinks after work, with some tables using the cheap prices to pre-game before a big night out around Ekkamai-Thonglor.
