BANGKOK BAR

The Kiwi Sport Pub & Grill

The buzz: The Soi 8 Pub has been renovated and renamed The Kiwi by the team behind The Australian (Sukhumvit Soi 11). To stand out from the Irish, English or Aussie pubs in town, The Kiwi’s all about New Zealand’s national rugby team, the All Blacks. It’s not only for rugby fans, though, with a wide range of sports on the screens and a family-friendly vibe that’s more conducive to chomping on a burger than getting pissed up with the lads.

The décor: No dramatic changes from the previous incarnation. It’s not too crowded, but it is laid back and full of the pictures and kits of the All Blacks team matching the female staff’s sporty black outfits. Next to the small stage are two pool tables while TV screens offer up a wide selection of live sports. Smokers might prefer the outdoor patio.

The music: A DJ plays a hodgepodge of rock anthems like Sweet Child o’ Mine to lighter pop-rock faves. Live bands should soon start playing on weekends.

The price: Eight draught beers and one cider (Magners, B240 a pint) on tap: from Chang (B110 a pint), Tiger (B130) to Guinness (B230), Kilkenny (B240) and Hoegaarden (B250). Bottles are available, too, especially a range of ciders like Westons The Governor (B240) and Magners Ginger (B240). You’ve also got your cocktails (from B195) and New World wines (Australian and Chilean, from B120 glass), while a Jaegerbomb will set you back B150. To go with your drinks are pub and diner-style dishes like Honey Bourbon Wings (B179) or fresh prawn spring rolls (B229). Ladies Night is on Thursday and enjoy 2-for-1 on all spirits with Friday’s TGIF promotion.

The crowd: Mostly expatriates who swing by after work or pop in for a big game. With the English Premier League being screened here, weekends can get more seriously sport-obsessed.

While you’ll come back: The friendly vibe doesn’t seem quite as intense as some sports bars—which is actually a good thing for some people—and the location is nice and close to the BTS.
