BANGKOK BAR

Yao Rooftop Bar

This rooftop bar pairs modern Chinese twists and 360-degree river views.

The buzz: Sip on botanical cocktails whilst taking in the Bangkok skyline from one of the best 360-degree vantages in Silom and Sathorn.

The decor: Situated on the 32nd floor of Bangkok Marriott Hotel The Surawongse, this rooftop bar offers impressive panoramic views, encompassing the Chao Phraya river, the historic Old Town and, of course, Bangkok’s glittering high rises. The decor focuses on the Thai concept of "chang sip moo"—traditional craftsmanship—with a contemporary Shanghainese twist, incorporating carved oriental screens, abstract sculptures and Chinese ceramics for a sleek aesthetic.

The drinks: Chinese-influenced cocktails come in stunning colors, like the fresh green Sweet Little Jade (B428), blended with Midori, kiwi, lime, vodka, and prosecco or the deep purple Shanghai, The City Upon the Sea (B298), which gains its hue from butterfly pea flower. The Chinese Highball (B328), laced with mango and bourbon, is punchy and potent—a must-try. For something a little different, the exotic Shanghai Swings (B288) comes with a unique banana flavor, whilst the Thai-leaning Dragon Fizz (B548) packs a real punch with spicy Thai chili, ginger and coriander.

The food: Whilst you’ll have to head to the restaurant downstairs for more substantial Chinese fine dining, the bar offers smaller dishes like Sichuan-style fried chicken (B288), which is perfectly balanced between sweet, salty, hot and sour, and the fresh noodles with spicy minced pork and gravy sauce (B318)—the perfect complement to the Chinese-inspired cocktails.

The crowd: Groups of friends and couples gather for low-key celebrations, whilst the odd suited-up businessman crops up from time to time.

The music: Modern Chinese beats contribute to the contemporary Shanghainese atmosphere, occasionally punctuated by bursts of more traditional music.

Why you should care: This spot offers unparalleled 360-degree views for the location—it's ideal for watching the sunset, too. Their drinks offer exciting twists on the usuals, whilst the mix of people means it works equally well for anything from a casual nightcap to a special celebration. Apiphusit Jirattitikul
