Chor Muang

Despite the grand architecture, Chor Muang is dishing up fairly average food at Siam Discovery’s new “sky dining” floor. Housed in a big open space with three-story-tall bay windows, Chor Muang shares this space with two other venues, each of which has its own décor style (or lack thereof). And although Chor Muang is perhaps the most pleasing and comfortable, it isn’t exactly exciting with its monochromatic “Victorian” furniture in modern materials—a very tired trend. You could say, however, average Thai food is a pleasant surprise in a mall. Chor Muang is not trying to dumb things down for tourists or come up with fancy fusion concepts. But every dish seems to elicit the same underwhelming comments: “It’s fine, but nothing to write home about.” The tasty, juicy kham waan (sweet, deep fried pork, B90), although never a light dish, here feels like the meat itself has turned to fat. The fish cakes (B100) are also glistening with oil, despite a pleasant, non-floury texture. The tom ka gai (sour coconut soup with chicken, B150) is spruced up by hearty chunks of fresh (well, fairly fresh) coconut, and the chicken feels less rubbery than is common. But the soup doesn’t taste particularly more natural or homemade than anywhere else, and such generous use of tomato chunks is completely uncalled for. Some things are a little worse (the nam prik goong sot is a weird vegetable compote with tiny bits of shrimp, B120), some a bit better (their smokey lord chong’s thick chunky noodles in crushed ice verges on awesome, actually, B40). Service may be a tad informal and haphazard, but they’re definitely aiming to please—and the food comes out fast. But you get the point: while definitely one of the better and cheaper options in Siam Discovery, there’s nothing to justify a trek to the 7/F for Chor Muang alone.
