BANGKOK RESTAURANT

D’Ark at Emquartier

Thonglor’s coffee shop slash brunch hangout slash refined restaurant opens at Emquartier.

The buzz: Now half a year old, Piman 49’s stylish cafe D'ark has made a name for its quality coffee sourced from Australian roaster Di Bella and a kitchen helmed by two French chefs with Michelin star chops. This new outpost reaches a wider crowd with its mall location while pandering to them with a more back-to-basics menu.

The decor: D’Ark’s second spot feels more grown up with its dark wood furniture paired with the brand’s signature leaf-embossed steel motifs. The signature coffee cart is again present, as is the long communal table in the center of the room. Alternatively, pull up a seat outdoors facing the mall’s central courtyard and waterfall. (Pets welcome.)

The food and drinks: Executive chef Jeriko Van Der Wolf and pastry chef Joffrey Jacob’s new menu leaves behind some of the more out-there touches of the original while capturing some of its creativity. The brunch menu (available till 6pm) features eggy dish like the Mornay eggs (slow-cooked duck eggs with in-house smoked duck, crispy potato galette and parmesan crisp, smothered in truffle Mornay sauce, B280) and breakfast burrito (with scrambled eggs, spicy chicken, tomato, avocado, bell pepper, lettuce and sour cream, B320). As for mains, the grilled blue river prawn (B430) gets its flavor from Eastern spices, while the duck breast Rossini (B790) sticks to classic French cooking.  Some old-menu favorites include the smoked beef and burrata (B360) and duck-patty Jeriko’s sliders (B380), as well as the signature espresso tiramisu (B180) and D’Ark opera (B220). Other dessert highlights include the simple apple tart (B360), baked a la minute. They also sell rotating wines (starting at B270 per glass) and craft beer.

Why you should care: Pet-friendly, close to the BTS, creativity that doesn’t get in the way of good flavors—in many ways we’d take it over the original.
