DID - Dine in the Dark

For the adventurous, looking to challenge your senses.

This fine-dining experience is about depriving you of your sense of sight in order to heighten your other five senses. Choose between meat, seafood or vegetarian before stepping into complete darkness, where visually-impaired staff serve as your personal guides for the evening, helping you feel around for the plates of food and drinks. Dinner charts through four courses, but it's up to you to guess what those courses are.

The buzz: Dark dining has been a popular trend in Switzerland (since 1998), Paris, and Berlin before spreading to major cities in Europe and the USA. This fine-dining experience is about depriving you of your sense of sight in order to heighten your other five senses. You choose between meat, seafood or vegetarian—and get no more details past that—and then step into complete darkness.

The décor: Utter darkness. Visually-impaired staff serve as your personal guides and waiters for the evening, leading you to your table and helping you feel around for the plates of food and drinks.

The food: As we said, you don’t know what you’re eating, but that’s half the fun: “That must be salad, and could this be salmon?” At times, we got it completely wrong as we found out on the way out, when you can actually see the beautifully-presented food. The chef rotates the menu so that even repeat customers will have fresh experiences. The four-course cyclinical set menu is B1420 per person, which could be Thai, Western, or even vegetarian.

Crowd: You can’t see them, but DID – Dine in the Dark attracts Bangkok’s hisos and young professionals looking for anything but an average fine-dining evening. Ruthie Napier
