BANGKOK RESTAURANT

Hip Hop Sushi

Sathorn now has a sushi restaurant that’s also a hip-hop club.

The buzz: Hip-hop culture meets sushi at this restaurant tucked away on the quiet but growing neighborhood of Sathorn Soi 1.

The decor: It's like a mini Shibuya has touched down in Sathorn with big, bold text covering the walls of what was previously I Hate Pigeons craft beer bar alongside glow graffiti by Thai artist, Conting52. The place is filled with vintage knick knacks smuggled over from Sapporo, including a random Japanese warrior suit standing in the corner. An abundance of colorful flashing lights gives it a more of a “bar that serves sushi as snacks” vibe rather than a Japanese restaurant that plays hip-hop music.

The food: Curated by the team at Ren’ai Catering service, their must-try dish is the Black Salmon Roll (B275), which features burned sushi topped with black caviar and their signature spicy sauce. If you’re watching your waistline, go for the Salad Salmon Aburi Roll (B285), where the greens are wrapped with salmon instead of rice paper. What really took us by surprise, though, was the Larb Salmon Kanikama (B320)—yes, it’s a pretty common sight on hip menus across the city these days, but the salmon served here is cut into small cubes and is icy cold, which really gives this rendition the edge. Food is served between 5-10pm only.

The drinks: Plenty of options that are sure to get you ready for a big night ahead, whether it’s classic cocktails (B220-300) or signature bingsu cocktails (all B280).

The music: It’s already in the name: everything hip-hop, from mainstream American to Japanese, with a massive screen playing the music videos to match. Live DJs play every Fri and Sat from 7pm-midnight, while local hip-hop talents are also set to make appearances.

Why we’d come back: This is certainly a new bar concept for Bangkok and we’re impressed by their food, making it a great spot to pre-game before heading out to a club. We’d also go here for dinner, just to experience a different setting. Choltanutkun Tun-atiruj
