BANGKOK RESTAURANT

Iron Chef Table

The first restaurant officially affiliated with the Iron Chef TV program.

The buzz: Iron Chef Table is the first restaurant officially affiliated with the Iron Chef TV program, which sees top chefs from various cuisines battle it out against cooking-crazy contestants.

The decor: As the TV program itself is heavily-themed, the restaurant just kind of follows it. The mood and tone is deadly serious, all black and silver evoking, while the huge open kitchen evokes the sense of a “kitchen stadium”—the studio-kitchen where chefs compete in the show—as you can see all of the cooking live, especially when sitting in one of the bar seats. More private tables are available on the mezzanine.

The food and drinks: The menu also plays with the show’s concept—which highlights one main ingredient each competition—by categorizing dishes around eight ingredients: lobster/prawn, wagyu beef, bluefin tuna, foie gras, black grouper, pork, duck and eggs. Chef Prasopchok “Art” Trakulphat helms the kitchen, hence why his dishes dominate the oversized menu, along with many from chef Ian Kittichai. Still, there are a few contributions from other Iron Chefs, including Thai chef Chumpol Jangprai’s long srong (lobster or prawn with Chinese morning glory and curried peanut sauce, B1,900), Chinese-cuisine chef Thanarak “Pom” Chuto’s baked chicken thigh with sichuan peppercorn dipping sauce (B390) and Japanese chef Hiroyuki Sakai’s roasted wagyu fillet wrapped in bamboo leaves (B3,900). Dessert chef Thanunya “Gai” Kaikaew adds her funkily-presented sweets to the menu with the likes of orange-shaped Grand Marnier parfait (B390), balanced out by caviar and wrapped in yuzu jelly. Mixologist Patcharin Norchan takes care of the drink menu, and her signature cocktails no less showy. Sassy Green Goddess (Tanqueray gin, chamomile tea, basil, B460), for example, comes in the form of a plant pot with basil stem, stone-replicating gelatin licorice and a mini watering can of ginger ale. The bar also stocks a list of red, white and sparkling wine starting at B380 by the glass.

Why you should care: This restaurant is one of the fanciest restaurants in Thailand, but there’s a whole lot of technique on display with every dish. The Iron Chef TV program has become such an institution that this becomes a rare treat to actually judge the chefs for yourselves. Watch out for special dinners featuring dishes created by the chefs during battles. Natcha Sanguankiattichai
