La Dotta La Grassa

Modern Italian style in a prime Asoke location.

The buzz: Thonglor’s chic pasta house, La Dotta, has spread its wings and opened a new location right down the street from Terminal 21. Foodie Collection, the people behind Vesper, Il Fumo and Via Maris, have gone bigger and bolder with La Grassa, not only in terms of size—here, there’s an expanded menu and a dedicated dessert bar specializing in their signature bomboloni (Italian filled doughnuts).

The decor: Compared to its older sister, La Grassa is bigger and a little sassier. With shades of light pink splashed amid royal and aqua blues, the decor has a retro '80s vibe that calls to mind the designs of Milan’s Memphis Group. High ceilings and walls dotted with mirrors, plants and neon lights contrast perfectly with the midnight blue banquette that runs along the side of the restaurant. Plush lavender stools overlook the black marble-top bar, while a mishmash of geometric lamps hang overhead. The hip diner vibe suits both a playful night out or a casual family lunch.

The food: La Grassa boasts of being Bangkok’s only standalone restaurant to use a Monferrina pasta machine (dubbed “the Ferrari of the pasta world”). If you’re the traditional type, stick with the rich wagyu Bolognese tagliatelle (B590), or go off piste with the decadent seared foie gras and wild mushroom (B590) with homemade casarecce pasta, sultanas and Parmigiano. However, head chef Luca Capitanio's food extends beyond pasta. Try the Strawberries and Truffle (B390), a refreshing salad with rocket, Parmigiano-Reggiano and black truffle, or dig into the crisp suckling pig (B690)—slow-cooked Sardinian style and served with roasted potatoes. You can’t leave without trying their bomboloni (B240/2pcs), which explode with flavors like Nutella, blueberry cheesecake and tiramisu.

The drinks: Palm Muttarattana, of Vesper, takes cues from the Italian classics in the likes of the Aperol spritz (B360) and thee colorful Strawberry Fritz (B390), made with strawberry gin, Mancino Bianco, sparkling wine and tonic. For something spirit-forward, the negroni (B360) won’t let you down. If you want to steer clear of alcohol, we recommend the freshly made orange lemonade (B180). The wine list puts a predominant focus on organic and natural labels.

Why we’d go back: With exemplary Italian comfort food and a refreshing cocktail list served up in a setting that's pure eye-candy, all we have to say is, what’s not to like?  Megan Leon
