The buzz: The first floor of Grease has finally been turned into something—and it has nothing to do with clubbing. It’s the third branch of Bangkok’s stylish brunch-and-cocktail café, Rocket.
The decor: Like all Rockets, loads of natural light thanks to a glasshouse-inspired entrance. Inside you get that comforting, Scandinavian feel of blond-wood furniture matched with marble and a geometric lighting sculpture.
The food: Scandinavian classics such as gravlax (house-cured salmon) on dark rye (B300) and Swedish meatballs (B330) served with gravy, mashed potato, lingon berries and pickled cucumber. For the first time there’s also a substantial dinner menu. This includes slow-cooked salted pork belly with garlic mash, roast fennel, gravy and pomegranate (B300) and crispy duck confit (B285). Of course, there are plenty of eggy breakfasts, too.
The drink: Coffee is the star here. Their Rocket Fuel brand of bottled cold press starts at B105, while caffe latte is B90 and espresso B75. Healthy juices at B90 include slow-pressed watermelon and “roots,” a mixture of beetroot, carrot and ginger. This is Rocket, so of course there are cocktails, too. Try the Microjito—white rum, lime, spearmint, sugar and soda (B315).
The crowd: Casual-yet-tastefully dressed expats and international high-schoolers.
