Sendo Sushi

A Thonglor sushi restaurant whose menu literally spills with laminated discount cards.

The poor Maze. Opening its doors at almost exactly the same time as The Commons and 72 Courtyard, this food-focused Thonglor community mall of the old-school variety never really set the neigborhood on fire. Sendo Sushi on its second floor is an equally non-boundary-pushing entry to Bangkok’s sushi scene.

Taking it to the deal-toting fusion-sushi bigwigs like Sushi Mori, Nippon Kai and Sushi Shin, this spot features a menu literally spilling with laminated discount cards offering up to 50-percent off a big portion of the dishes. Make good use of them and dinner at Sendo can just about add up.

The restaurant has its fundamentals right, for one thing, meaning basic sushi comes plentifully sliced and tastes perfectly fresh. During lunch hours, you can get a B450 set complete with seven lovely pieces of sushi just the right size to take down in one bite, along with some tuna maki and tamago (omelet). Order the same thing at peak times and you’d pay double that. Excusing the rubbery omelet and a piece of eel that tastes like leftovers from the week before, it’s a satisfying effort.

But everything else we try comes up severely short. An omelet stuffed with that same past-its-prime eel tastes all of its B120 price tag—oily and covered in a sweet soy sauce that makes for a sickly combination with the overly sweetened egg. Their signature Dynamite Roll (B300, currently discounted to B150) is a salmon-topped assault to the stomach thanks to a buttery cheese filling so weak it’s like biting into lard. We also have nothing good to say about the negitoro don rice bowl’s slimy mix of tuna offcuts and ikura pearls—avoid, whether at the B1,350 RRP or B675 discount price.

If you want good sushi, then head across the road to Endo at The Taste Thonglor. If you want cheap sushi, then turn up here (just don’t let the rest of the menu distract you).
