BANGKOK RESTAURANT

The Hass BistroBK Distribution

Bangkok gets a cafe all about avocados.

The buzz: The avocado fad to end all avocado fads. The Hass Bistro, which has opened up shop on Sukhumvit, has an all-day-dining menu dedicated to the creamy green fruit.

The decor: The two-story restaurant goes minimalist in that soothing and natural Japanese way. Downstairs, by the kitchen and juice bar, is a high-top table looking out onto hectic Soi 49. The mezzanine, what they’ve dubbed the “avocado garden zone,” overlooks the ground floor and is replete with traditional seating as well as sofas and tatami cushions around low tables. The whole place is washed with natural light that combines with the teal walls give the room an earthy, peaceful atmosphere.

The food: Their Hass avocados are shipped from New Zealand and are served in every imaginable form and flavor. In the crunchy avocado (B240), breaded wedges of avocado are deep-fried for creamy, crispy mouthfuls with a side of sriracha aioli dip. The Avo Burger (prawn B395, chicken B335), meanwhile, really isn’t a burger at all, substituting bread for avocado halves and beef for chicken or prawn, with layers of lettuce, cheese and red onions. On the Thai-fusion end, there’s a tom yam pasta (B395) served with grilled prawns, cherry tomatoes and, somewhat superfluous here, slices of avocado. Avocados are also available for purchase for B89 a piece.

The drinks: There's an avocado smoothie (B155), of course, but we'd recommend switching things up with a cold-pressed juice like the Bloody Roar (B140): red apple, beetroot, watermelon and pineapple.

Why we’d come back: We love avocados.
