Bangkok Design Week 2024 (Jan 27 - Feb 4) is fast approaching—an annual celebration of Bangkok’s wild creativity. This year’s theme is “Livable Scape: The more people do, the better the city,” and the design week pledges to ‘act’ more to ‘improve’ the city by providing new experiences and activities with diverse and dynamic designs. A strategy of soft power to boost the creative economy of the city.

Spanning 9 days, there will be around 500 activities distributed over 15 creative areas in Bangkok. Creators will transform the city with activities, exhibitions, discussions, workshops, events, music, markets, cooking demonstrations, and neighborhood tours from walking and biking to kayaking.

There will also be a Happening City app, an interactive map and crowdsourcing platform to ensure you attend as many events as you like. BK has selected a few of the ones we’re most looking forward to below, but check out all the activities here

After.BKK

Bangkok, if you haven’t noticed, is sinking—no big deal, right? Well, this interdisciplinary creative exhibition will be exploring our future as a city underwater. Head here for sculptures, paintings, and photography in the not-to-distant future.

Bangkok Street Performers

The Happy Garden Festival brings together the performing arts with 16 performances scheduled throughout Design Week. Meet a variety of bands, including Thai, acoustic, percussion, and entertainment such as hula hooping, magic, juggling, silent theater, puppet shows, mime, clowns, and more. There will also be workshops where you can try your hand at some tricks.

Sam Rub Ban Khrua

Always wanted to take a culinary class? Well, this is for you.  Design Week welcomes you to a culinary session in a 200-year-old Thai historic home, where you can make ganeng som (sour tamarind curry), a classic Southern Thai dish, curry puffs, and roti. They’ll also be hosting some edible walking tours around Ratchathewi.

Kayaking Around Bang Mot Khlong

Kayak around the Bang Mot Khlong region, admire the street art, and listen to music performed by students from schools around the area. The Bang Mot Khlong region is rich in nature, and the people of the village rely on the ecosystem.

Change by CEA Market

Based on the theme “Let’s Enjoy Creative Little Things,” the market will be showcasing innovative items from Thai entrepreneurs and creators in five different categories: scent and sensibility, trendy fashion and accessories, pet-friendly heaven, hobby happiness and Wish Me Luck, featuring charms, horoscopes, and fortune telling resources. Find all this and more across more than 100 booths. More info on the different booths can be found here

Seacon Square Srinakarin

The Celeb Square retail center's rooftop parking lot lighting installation will change the way you think about parking lots: illumination and music to wander the art pieces. Srinakarin will also feature the "Wayla" project, a creative design effort aimed at public spaces in partnership with KMITL's Faculty of Architecture, Art, and Design (AAD). All the lighting installations generate electricity from Asia-Pacific's largest solar cell energy source.

Human of Flower Market

Participate in interactive projection mapping developed by 27 June Studio to hone your green thumb. The project, called "Collective Blooms," involves digital technology to track flower seeds that are discovered in the Khlong Toei Market area and plant them in flower pots at the First Post Office Monument Building. Within the same vicinity, the work of students enrolled at Silpakorn University's MA and Ph.D. programs in Vernacular Architecture and Built Environment (VABE) will also be on display. The theme of the exhibit is "I Flower You." This artwork extends an invitation to the public to take part in the showcasing by bringing flowers to attach, adorn, and write messages to someone special.

Mayday!

Board the newly invented Go Go bus, which promotes neighborhood travel while serving as a prototype tour bus with ready-to-use information for travelers. This prototype bus will be a way to connect you to major tourist destinations and to simplify transportation between economic areas—all of which will help minimize traffic.

K Village Farmers’ Market

Support local farmers between Jan 27-28 at K Village, where healthy, environmentally conscious customers can buy fresh goods directly from producers. Natural home and body care items, artisan breads, made-to-order meals, organic products, natural apparel, handcrafted jewelry, arts and crafts, and much more will be available. They'll also have a Lifestyle Market on Feb 2-4. The market will be themed on all things craft beer, with Urban Eatery, a supplier of Thai specialty beers, hosting.
